Understanding PDF analytics

Learn how SGNL measures PDF views, downloads, reading time, completion, and reader engagement.

PDF analytics focuses on practical questions: whether people opened the document, whether they downloaded it, and how engaged they were in Smart Preview.

The exact metrics available depend on whether the asset uses Direct PDF mode or Smart Preview.

Can SGNL track how long someone reads a PDF?

Yes. When Smart Preview is enabled, SGNL can measure active reading time while the reader is actively viewing the PDF.

Important

Reading time is an engagement estimate. It does not prove that the reader understood every page.

What PDF metrics matter most?

  • Views or opens.
  • Downloads.
  • Reading time.
  • Pages viewed.
  • Completion rate.
  • Returning readers.
  • Top channels and placements.
Tip

Use separate tracked assets when sharing the same PDF through different channels. That keeps attribution easier to understand.

How should I interpret PDF performance?

High opens with low reading time may mean the title or QR placement is strong but the document is not holding attention. High views with very few downloads may mean the reader found enough information in the preview and did not need the file saved locally.
