How to Create a Referral Code
Learn how to create unique referral codes for customers, employees, creators, partners and campaigns.
Part of SGNL's Referrals use cases for businesses that want to understand what happens after they share links, QR codes, PDFs and review requests.
What is a referral code?
A referral code is a short identifier that connects an interaction to its source. It can identify an individual, team, branch, creator, employee or campaign. The code should not be treated as proof of a conversion until the qualifying business event has been verified.
What makes a good referral code?
Good codes are short, readable, unique and easy to communicate. Avoid confusing characters such as O and 0, private information, unnecessary punctuation and names that may change. If codes are customer-facing, make them easy to type and recognise aloud.
Personal codes versus campaign codes
A personal code answers who generated the recommendation. A campaign code answers which promotion or source generated it. Use different identifiers when you need both questions answered; one shared code cannot reliably distinguish every referrer and placement.
Create codes for different groups
Customers can receive codes for ongoing word of mouth, employees can receive codes for staff referral initiatives, and creators or partners can receive codes for trackable promotion. Branch or event codes can identify a location without exposing individual customer information.
Turn a code into a link
The same identifier can be carried by a referral URL so digital sharing does not depend on manual entry. Provide both formats when referrals happen online and offline, and keep the reporting identity the same across both.
Track code usage
Record code use, visit or scan activity, the qualifying action and reward status separately. This makes it possible to compare high-volume codes with codes that produce fewer but more valuable outcomes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I create my own referral code?
Choose a short unique identifier, assign it to the intended referrer or campaign, connect it to a destination or offer and define the event that qualifies the referral.
Is a referral code the same as a promo code?
No. A promo code primarily applies an offer, while a referral code identifies the source of a recommendation. The same value can serve both purposes if attribution is stored separately.
Can a referral code be a link?
The code is the identifier and the link is the URL that carries it. A code can therefore be used manually or embedded in a referral link.
Do referral codes expire?
They can. Set expiry when the code belongs to a time-limited campaign; ongoing customer programs may use evergreen codes with clear eligibility rules.
How do businesses track referral codes?
They record the code at the interaction or conversion point and connect it to the referrer, campaign, qualifying action and reward status.
