QR Code Scans vs Conversions: What Should You Measure?

Understand the difference between QR scans and conversions, and choose the right measurement hierarchy for your campaign.

7 min read
Measure both scans and conversions, but give them different jobs. Scans measure use of the QR entry point; conversions measure progress toward the campaign goal.

Part of SGNL's Marketing Intelligence resources for businesses that want to understand what happens after they share links, QR codes, PDFs and review requests.

Scans measure entry-point activity

A scan tells you that a person used the code and reached the next step. It is useful for evaluating visibility, placement and initial interest. It does not by itself reveal whether the visitor understood the offer, engaged with the page or completed the intended action.

Conversions measure the intended outcome

A conversion is the action that matters for the campaign, such as an enquiry, booking, download, purchase or completed form. Define it in a way the measurement system can observe. If the final action happens offline, choose a transparent proxy and state its limits.

Read the relationship between them

Low scans and high downstream engagement suggest a distribution problem. High scans and low engagement suggest a message, destination or technical problem. High engagement and low conversion suggest friction, weak qualification or an offer that does not match the audience.

Use intermediate actions when needed

Some journeys need more than two points. Track actions such as opening a menu, starting a chat, viewing a product, clicking a review destination or beginning a form. A funnel with clear intermediate steps helps teams identify where to improve without overstating what the data proves.

Choose the KPI hierarchy

Use the conversion or business outcome as the primary KPI, qualified engagement as a supporting KPI and scans as an entry-point diagnostic. This keeps the report connected to the reason the QR code exists.

FAQ

Should scans or conversions be the primary KPI?

Conversions should usually be primary when they are observable and relevant to the goal. Scans remain important for diagnosing distribution and entry-point performance.

What counts as a QR conversion?

It depends on the campaign. Define the action in advance, such as a booking, enquiry, download or completed form.

Can a campaign have good scans but poor results?

Yes. A high scan count can coexist with a slow, confusing or mismatched post-scan experience.
