QR tracking records activity at the redirect used by the code. UTM tracking labels the resulting website visit inside an analytics platform such as GA4. They measure different parts of the journey and are usually most useful together.

Part of SGNL's Comparison resources for businesses that want to understand what happens after they share links, QR codes, PDFs and review requests.

What QR tracking measures

A dynamic QR platform can record the scan or redirect request, timestamp, placement, broad location, device and repeat activity. It works before the visitor reaches the destination.

This makes it useful when the destination belongs to another service or when the page fails to load.

What UTM parameters measure

UTMs are labels added to a URL. A website analytics tool reads values such as source, medium, campaign and content when the page loads.

They help organise sessions and conversions alongside email, social, ads and other channels.

Does a QR code need UTMs?

Not always. A QR redirect can already identify its own campaign. Add UTMs when the destination website uses analytics and you want the visit to appear with clear campaign labels.

Avoid adding meaningless parameters simply because a builder offers them. Naming should answer reporting questions.

Why scans and sessions differ

A person can scan but close the page before analytics loads. Browser privacy tools may block the tag. One scan can create several page events, while repeat scans may be grouped differently by each system.

Therefore, scan totals should not be forced to equal website sessions.

Can UTMs identify a printed placement?

Yes, when each placement receives a distinct parameter value. For example, the campaign can remain summer_offer while utm_content distinguishes receipt, counter_card and window_poster.

A dedicated dynamic QR for each placement provides the same distinction at redirect level and is easier to manage visually.

Can QR tracking work without GA4?

Yes. The redirect can record scan activity independently. This is useful for Google review links, WhatsApp links, app stores and third-party destinations where your analytics tag cannot run.

It will not automatically show what happened inside those external platforms.

Can UTMs work without dynamic QR tracking?

Yes. A static code can encode a URL containing UTMs. GA4 can then label successful page loads.

You lose redirect-level editability and scan events, but this can be sufficient for a stable website campaign.

A sensible naming system

Use source for the originating environment, medium for the channel type, campaign for the initiative and content for placement or creative. Keep values lowercase and consistent.

Document the convention. utm_source=offline and utm_medium=qr are only useful if the team applies them consistently.

Comparing posters and brochures

Create one trackable asset per material or placement. Keep the landing page and offer the same during the test.

Use QR data to compare attention and website analytics to compare behaviour after arrival. A poster may win scans while a brochure wins conversions.

Common reporting mistakes

Do not label every QR visit as direct traffic. Do not compare scan totals with users without explaining the definitions. Do not reuse one code across placements that need to be compared.

Most importantly, do not treat the QR scan as the conversion unless scanning itself completes the intended action.
